Acupressure

My favorite resource for acupressure is the on-line PointFinder on the Stanford School of Medicine web site. You enter symptoms you are experiencing, and it provides you a pop-up list of applicable acupressure points. This site is great for all kinds of symptoms such as colds, flu, pain, headaches, etc. as well as things like depression, smoking cessation, insomnia, anxiety etc.

Another great meridians reference site is the Yin Yang House. On this site you click on a meridian and it gives you a diagram of all the points on that meridian. You click on one of the points on that meridian and it shows you what body functions are associated with this point. I love this site for reference. It is not helpful for symptom look-up like the Beginner's Guide to Acupressure site above.

Great Health and Nutrition Resources

These are my favorite resources that I use when I am researching something about health or diet for myself or a client.
  • The Weston A. Price Foundation. Dr. Weston A. Price was a Cleveland dentist and has been called the "Charles Darwin of Nutrition." Today the Weston A. Price Foundation carries on Weston's work, and only accepts contributions from members and/or private donations, and does not accept funds from the meat or dairy industries. This is a rich resource for health, nutrition, and evaluating treatment alternatives.

  • Dr. Joseph Mercola. His home page is a bit overwhelming. Don't let all the products and hype confuse you. There is a ton of valuable content at this site. Use the search engine to find articles about your subject of interest.

  • Ask Dr. Weil is a rich web site with lots of content such as:
    • "Ask Dr. Weil" archives with answers to tons of questions about health and healing
    • "Food as Medicine" section with a directory of illnesses and helpful healing foods for those conditions
    • Nutrition Education describing the Optimum Diet
    • Fabulous recipes
    • "Vitamin Adviser" where you answer questions about your life style and history, and it recommends a personalized nutritional supplement plan

  • Raymond Francis' Beyond Health has many articles as well as many audio interviews on health topics. There is a site search engine so you can easily home in on what you are seeking. Raymond Francis is an MIT chemist, not an MD.

  • Dr. David Williams. He has a fabulous newsletter you can buy, which then gives you on-line access to his newsletter archives. This web site has a bit of free material but the bulk of the content is in the member-only section. This member-only section has great information but no search engine which makes finding things cumbersome. I usually download back newsletters in the time frame I remember reading something and then search them on my own computer using my own search application.

  • For Women:
  • The People's Pharmacy

  • You can read about supplements research at the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements web site. One of the problems with supplements in the United States is that there is not regulation to assure that what is on the bottle's label is actually in the bottle. Check for a "GMP" label. GMP stands for 'Good Manufacturing Practice' which means that the manufacturer hired an independent contractor to randomly pull and test bottles off store shelves 4 times per year. The GMP label assures that what is on the label is in the bottle. It does not assure that your body can absorb this product.

Great books on getting and staying healthy:

  • DO YOU DRINK ENOUGH WATER??? I have had several clients experience major healing break throughs after they finally agreed to start drinking enough water. We are electrical beings, water conducts electricity, and our bodies must be properly hydrated to function efficiently. Fereydoon Batamanghelidj, M.D. has done extensive research on the relationship between health and hydration. His web site is The Water Cure. One of his books on this subject is: Your Body's Many Cries for Water: You are not sick you are thirsty! . If you have health problems and there is any question in your mind about whether or not you drink enough water, please do yourself a favor and check out this web site and book.

  • Ayurveda is defined in the dictionary as "the ancient Hindu science of health and medicine". Ayurveda is a huge body of knowledge going back 5,000 years in India. Many of Deepak Chopra's teachings come from his Ayurvedic training in India. One of my reference texts on this subject is The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad. This book is packed with easy non-chemical remedies for many common ailments and illnesses.

  • In Staying Healthy With the Seasons by Elson M. Haas, M.D. combines his Eastern and Western expertise in an exquisitely designed readable book that you can use during each of the seasons. He recommends foods to eat and things to do each season to optimize your health. This is one of my all time favorite books!

  • I changed many of my eating and life habits when I read The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way by Daniel Reid. This was an amazing life changing book for me. I read this book before becoming an alternative healer, and I know that this book was part of my transition process. My heath improved after incorporating ideas from this book. The person who originally recommended this book to me was Patrick "Rick" Fuller, a runner competing for the Olympics. Rick felt that the ideas in this book greatly improved his running performance. I highly recommend this book for all my clients.

  • Two books by Andrew Weil, M.D. which are my favorites include:

Aromatherapy, Essential Oils, and Flower Essences

Sanskrit Mantra Chanting

Sanskrit is the ancient language of energy. We can change the energy flow in our bodies through the use of sound. We can use ancient Sanskrit chants for healing, clearing, or attracting things into our lives. There are all kinds of chants for many different things. A few web pages with a few chanting sound samples are: Thomas Ashley-Farrand is one of the experts in this field that speaks English. He has written a nice book on the subject that has a lot of chants documented and described, as well as history, description, process for chanting, etc. Thomas's book is entitled Healing Mantras: Using Sound Affirmations for Personal Power, Creativity, and Healing. His "Mantras and Health" chapter in this book includes chants for Fibromyalgia, eye problems, lung problems, pain, mental health, viral infections, and general health and healing. Thomas Ashley-Farrand also has a "Sanskrit Mantras and Spiritual Power" web site. On this website he has a few free articles with samples of a few chants as well as an FAQs page.

Laughter as Good Medicine

"Laughter is the shortest distance between two people." (Victor Borge)

Surgery Support

  • The best article that I have seen about ways to support your body before, during and after surgery is Surgery as a Healing Ritual. Although this was written for surgery patients at Landmark Urology & Complementary Medicine in Raleigh, it is the best checklist I have seen of things that can do to support your healing. This is a beautiful example of how we can blend eastern and western medical traditions. Speak to your surgeon about anything you plan to take or do before, during, or after your surgery.
